E ora come la mettiamo con la storia degli extraprofitti delle società energetiche da tassare, con il tetto di Eni, IP, Q8 (dal 1° ottobre), al prezzo della benzina? Saranno pure pannicelli caldi gli sconti di questi giorni, peraltro in alcuni casi di qualche millesimo, a fronte dei guadagni bulimici delle compagnie petrolifere con il conflitto Usa-Iran. Ma siamo sicuri che il governo ci avrebbe pensato alla “moral suasion” sui prezzi di benzina e diesel, senza dover parare il colpo alle martellate del Pd che agita la clava della tassazione degli extra-guadagni sulla pelle dei contribuenti?
A voler essere ingenui, saremmo di fronte a un esempio di genuina alternanza democratica e di sano bilanciamento fra poteri dello Stato, questo confronto all’arma bianca maggioranza/opposizione. Va detto che il caos geopolitico mette il governo e le minoranze in Parlamento, non solo in Italia, di fronte a una casualità di fattori. Riesce difficile oggi pensare a una strategica compensazione di ruoli tra poteri della Repubblica.
Il governo vuol farla passare come un’iniziativa autonoma della controllata Eni, la premier Meloni ringrazia e confida ora nell’effetto domino sulla riduzione del prezzo alla pompa anche di altre compagnie. Dopotutto sarebbe stata dura per l’Esecutivo fare orecchie da mercante sulla tassazione degli extraprofitti in campagna elettorale, di fronte al prolungato salasso dei contribuenti per fare benzina.
Ma non c’è dubbio che l’effetto-immagine ci sia tutto in questo scontro con vista sulle Politiche 2027. Se poi aggiungiamo la consegna degli atti secretati dalla Francia per quarantasei anni sulla strage di Ustica, la Presidenza del consiglio passa ancora all’incasso e su questo terreno sarà difficile ribaltare il tavolo sia per Vannacci che il centrosinistra che sugli sconti alla pompa da due giorni non dice nulla.
Va da sé che la scontistica di Eni (1,99 per la benzina, 2,19 sul gasolio, IP ha fatto lo stesso) non allevierà più di tanto i sacrifici degli automobilisti. Si vedrà sul lungo periodo, anche se a fronte di prezzi alla pompa che sette mesi fa non superavano i 2 euro al litro (neppure per il diesel), si fa presto a calcolare quanto l’aumento dei costi sul bilancio familiare il sia già sufficientemente salato.
E comunque al momento il “Price cup” regge alla prova dell’opinione pubblica, la tregua sui carburanti pure a meno che Trump non s’inventi un’altra delle sue, tipo tornare a bombardare l’Iran (come già promesso), dopo le elezioni di Midterm ai primi di novembre. Loro provano a tamponare, lui disfa.
Extra Profits with Gasoline on Sale
And now what about the story of energy companies’ extra profits to be taxed by capping gasoline prices on Eni, IP, Q8 (starting October 1st). The recent discounts, in some cases by a few thousandths, may be just a temporary fix compared to the extraordinary gains made by oil companies since the US-Iran conflict broke out. But are we sure the government would have considered “moral suasion” on gasoline and diesel prices, without considering having to fend off the PD’s hammer blows, which are still demanding taxation of oil companies’ extra profits at the expense of taxpayers?
If we were to appear naive, we would be faced with an example of genuine democratic alternation and a healthy balance of power between the powers of the state, this stalemate between the majority and the opposition. It must be said that geopolitical chaos presents the government and the minorities in Parliament, not only in Italy, with a combination of factors. It’s difficult today to envision a strategic balancing of roles between the powers of the Republic.
The government wants to pass it off as an independent initiative by subsidiary Eni, and Prime Minister Meloni is grateful and now hopes for a domino effect in reducing pump prices for other companies as well. After all, it would have been difficult for the Executive to turn a deaf ear to the taxation of extra profits during the election campaign, faced with the prolonged bloodletting of taxpayers for gasoline.
But there’s no doubt that this clash, ahead of the 2027 general election, is all about image. If we then add the handover of the documents kept secret by France for forty-six years regarding the Ustica massacre, the Prime Minister’s decision is once again cashing in, and on this issue, it will be difficult to turn the tables, both for Vannacci and the center-left, which has been silent on pump discounts for two days.
It goes without saying that Eni’s discount (1.99 for gasoline, 2.19 for diesel; IP has done the same) won’t significantly alleviate the burdens of motorists. We’ll see in the long run, although given that pump prices didn’t exceed €2 per liter seven months ago (not even for diesel), it’s easy to calculate how much the cost increase on household budgets has already taken a toll. And in any case, for now, the “Price cap” is holding up to the test of public opinion; the fuel truce is holding unless Trump comes up with another one of his own, like bombing Iran again (as he’s already promised) after the midterm elections in early November, as he’s already promised.
