Renzi, pensaci tu.

For Vannacci, men “should stink.”

Education in respect doesn’t appeal to the hard-line types in Vannacci’s party. The crusade against the Giulia Cecchettin Foundation, which promotes it in schools, is alleged to be a manipulation of human capacity and will. Even that of raping at will, one might ask?

What won’t one do for an extra vote? But here we are at a paradox: according to the bizarre thesis of a Veneto regional councilor who identifies with the former general’s party, “the program criminalizes the male gender.” Put like that, the sentence allows for a reasoned periphrasis: if the foundation promotes respect for the human race without distinction, and men feel “criminalized” by this, what message would be more appropriate to persuade them? We’re talking about the “man who stinks,” a popular anecdote of southern Italian origin from the late 19th century, but in that case, it was referring to the toil in the fields, which almost became a distinctive trait for those who worked hard to earn their living.

The impression is that Futuro Nazionale, in an attempt to distance itself from its “hard-core” views on the issue, where the extremists of the Brothers of Italy party already occupy the space, is forced to pursue models that are highly dangerous, not to mention self-justifying, compared to what the shocking news about femicides denounces every day.

The councilor, however, is taking a wide berth; rather than an attack on the Giulia Cecchettin Foundation, the real target appears to be the Ministry of Education and Minister Valditara, who has apparently shown no diligence in preventing children from obtaining informed consent in school on topics such as sexual education and affectivity.

The law requires consent only in high school, with parental authorization. But Vannacci’s party denounces “children’s ideological orientation,” even insinuating the suspicion that with that kind of education (about consensus, emotional intelligence, we’re talking about that…) male children eventually end up “feeling guilty.”

We’re at the point of a controversy of the absurd, but perhaps it’s right to limit it to “pre-election chatter” that obscures any sense of reality and confines all issues, especially the most absurd, to the arena of those who exaggerate the most to gain more attention. And indeed, the deafening silence of Minister Valditara and of an honest and respectable man like Gino Cecchettin (photo in the title) speaks louder than any words.

A few words about Cecchettin: his restraint, his respect for institutions, and the Olympian calm with which he faced the pain of losing his daughter Giulia, brutally murdered by her fiancé Turetta, are signs of uncommon moral integrity and poise. If politicians found the strength to nominate a man of such caliber for the presidency of the Republic, for the post-Mattarella era, it would be a moment of great rehabilitation for the system in the eyes of the electorate. It may not happen, but it has happened before: in 2015, the Renzi government, in order to block Prodi’s path, proposed and voted for a great president, Sergio Mattarella, who served two terms. Following the same pattern, Cecchettin would have a chance only if they could identify the anti-president to cripple. Renzi, you take care of that.
